September is National Cholesterol Education Month. More than one million Americans have a heart attack each year and about 500,000 die from heart disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance in your blood. Having too much of the “bad” cholesterol and not enough of the “good” can put us at risk for coronary heart disease.

If you have high cholesterol, here are a few recommended

lifestyle changes you can make to help lower your levels:

  •  Eat more low-fat and high-fiber food, like fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • 1-2 hours of physical activity  and exercise per a week
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  •  Quit smoking
