Spending time outdoors is a great way to get vitamin D, reduce stress, and keep an active lifestyle. While outside it is important to remember to practice UV safety. Our skin is vulnerable and at risk from overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays all year round and more so during the hot summer months.
UV rays are an invisible radiation that come from the sun. Most skin cancers are caused from overexposure to this ultraviolet light. The American Cancer Society estimates 5.4 million types of basal skin cancers are diagnosed annually!
Unprotected sun exposure may lead to skin irritation, blistering, heat rash or loss of skin integrity. Protect your skin by using a broad spectrum sunblock, and reapply regularly. Avoid the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., as this is when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest. Protect yourself by wearing sunglasses or a hat, and utilizing shaded areas for your outdoor activities.
